Janice's inspiration
As we walk through the woods and forests over here, which we enjoy often with our English Springer Spaniel Frankie, he sometimes runs off on his own and flushes out a Woodcock, I was drawn to these beautiful birds which I find to be quite magical and is the cause for my inspiration to study these birds in my paintings, we see quite a lot of wildlife where we live in Brittany when we go on our walks. These woodcock are crepuscular (most active at dawn and dusk) and rarely active during the day unless flushed, when they fly off they make a whirring wing noise and can often fly erratically with twisting and fluttering once in woodland which we find fascinating to watch and a pleasure to see.
I have created a collection of detailed woodcock study paintings which are painted in gouache, I have used this medium because I think the colours seem more suited to the bird and look more natural and delicate, the backgrounds are kept plain so your eye focuses on the bird itself.
